Plagiarism in publishing

Computers and the internet have made many tasks easier- including the ability to commit theft and cheat. No, this is not a reference to sophisticated phishing scams, e-banking heists or the various forms of online fraud and data theft, often discussed in the E-Security debate. The ease of access to unprecedented levels of digitized and digital material has given way to an epidemic of ‘copy-and-paste’ content-producing in favor of actual writing. As the good folks at Tunitin (an online plagiarism prevention system) – put it, “the seemingly ‘public’ nature of online content blurs the distinction between publicly and privately owned information. Electronic resources, by nature easily reproducible, are not perceived as ‘intellectual property’, in the same way that their material counterparts are. Just as peer-to-peer file sharing programs have made it easy to trade copyrighted music files, which most people would never think to steal in physical form, the internet makes plagiarism easy for students and writers who might have thought twice about copying from book or a published article.”

Plagiarism, that is, deliberately using someone else’s language, ideas, or other original material without acknowledging the source, has been the bane of publishers, writers and researchers long before the existence of the World Wide Web. However, today, anyone with sufficient technical ability to operate a computer an surf online, can access and snip unlimited amounts of content and publish it, making readers believe that certain written material is original, when it is not.

Content theft is a serious concern for many bloggers and line publications. Recently, it seems their paper-based print counterparts too, are not spared from the scourge of intellectual property theft.

How to do Simple SEO

Simple SEO is really an easy task if you do it in simple way. Strange! Yes but it is so. First step of Search Engine Optimization is known by almost everyone who is up to doing this as hobby or professionally. This first first step is keyword research. No... Keyword research is not the first step.

First step is to check the layout of website and consult the webmaster and developers. The website should be search engine friendly. It must contain the necessary tags. These tags should be filled with the targeted, required and appropriate words in specific length.

All the keyword research and back linking may be useless if the layout is not compatible with the strategy of search engines. Few things are compulsory like title, meta, links and content. Actually its all about website. But presence of these makes sure that once you deeply optimize the website with passage of time it will not be easier to push you down in search result page.

Concentrate on the layout, find the proper tags and if not as per the requirement of SEO, then ask the webmaster or developer to modify the code. You should also be capable enough to understand the coding that only include head section (meta & title) and linking, images, headings and alt tags in body section.

Website should not contain much java scripting or animations. Because search engine does not understand or can not read movies or flash stuff.

After finalizing the design of whole website now concentrate on titles of every page. This should be within limit of 7 to 9 words. It should be relevant to the content of its page. General title for every page is not recommended. Personalize it as the content describes. Actually it describes the content in a glimpse. Search engine consider titles and give worth to them in rating of a page.

Now do the research on keywords, sort them out, use different tools, filter them for different pages. List down all relevant keywords. List down all links of pages which you want to be displayed in search results. Like product page or portfolio page or services page depending on nature of website.
Compare the keywords with every page and join the most fittest ones.
Avoid repetition of keywords because it will confuse search engine and keyword cannibalization which means internal competition within pages will start.

After doing keyword research now focus on description of the page which you want to tell search engine about the page. The length should be kept in mind, Squeeze the most suitable wording within description tag. Describe it well and it should be thoroughly relevant to the content. Description is shown in search result. Readers sometimes do not read the whole link but the description. So do not ignore the description. It must contain some words for the website as a whole and then it should be customized for every page. You can use different descriptions on different pages and it is recommended.

Now make pages on social networking websites like twitter, google buzz, RSS and others. Invite people through your social circle and propagate your website content and features on regular basis.
Put links of such websites on your pages so that user can also share your website over their social network. It will increase the traffic over your website.

While maintaining above mentioned important points now start working on backlinking. It is quite important for websites. Because search engine find more worthy a website if many websites are referring to it. It will first give the good impression of authenticity and further it will add to the pagerank value of your web pages.

SEO is slow and hard hitting continuously.

How Search Engine Works

First of all we will understand what is search engine? Search Engine is basically a website that collects information from Internet and display to the user as a result page against his query. Search Engine contains a bot or space where the user enters keyword and press "Search". The result is shown on the next page with links and a short detail.

Search Engines basically use an algorithmic software called Crawler (bot, robot, spider). All of these terms are used for the same purpose. The search engine does not see the website as we do. The crawler visits the website, collects information and process it. To understand the working of crawler, we take an example: Crawler contains a worksheet with fields on it. When it starts visiting the website it fills in the data in appropriate fields. It is quite similar like people who go door to door to collect information of people living in houses to estimate the size of population. The work sheet that crawler contains have such entries like URL, Title, Meta, Content and Links. Each of them is expandable to write details in the worksheet. After collecting the required data from the website the crawler process it and index or store it in search engine database.

There are trillions of website floating all over Internet and these crawlers are being run by set of high end servers to collect most updated information. This information is presented to the user upon his query through search engine.

The information presented to the user may contain web pages, images or news. Everything is presented as a link. User clicks on the required search result and redirected to the page he was looking for. To give most appropriate information search engine crawlers are frequently updating the database of search engine by regular visits on websites.

The best SEO needs the understanding of search engine working. Search engine rate the website according to its text. The text comes under the coding. Coding exactly tells the crawler about title, meta and content. The crawler crawls the website and find most relevant information and among all websites most relevant website is rated on the top. Search Engines further index the pages in their database and process them. It results in to a compiled database of most relevant and appropriate websites. Indexing means tagging the words that best describes your website. That is why the website design should be search engine friendly. It must contain proper tags and relevant information within them. Optimizing the website with proper information in terms of coding will let search engines to give a higher ranking.

When a person enters a phrase or keywords in search engine bot, the search engine compares these words in its database to fetch most relevant information matching the keywords entered. This information is retrieved from indexed database. It is displayed on SERPs as links with some short description. Now there could be millions of websites matching our keywords here is the job of search engine to give us ease by providing most relevant websites on top of its search results. Of course this process of search engine is quite much complex but it all depends on the content, head and links of the website. Their relevancy with the content, title, headings and links.

Different search engines use different algorithm to represent the search result, thus we are given options to optimize our website according to their strategies. Search engines do change their formula time to time which is required to meet the searching criteria of users. SEO expert should keep pace with the search engines changing strategies. This requires a proper SEO plan.

We can not optimize perfectly for every search engine so we should first analyze which search engine is being used by most of the users. After analysis we have come to know that Google is the most popular search engine. More than 90% people look information through Google. Then around 4% user use Yahoo and 3% people use Bing. Our focus must be on Google and then we should also keep some requirements of Yahoo and Bing also which can be accommodated in our optimization process.

SEO vs Branding

SEO vs Branding both are marketing strategies. Both are opted to increase sales. Generating high ROI. We will describe a comparison between both business strategies in details.

Branding is traditional approach to attract customers and win loyalty. SEO is all about targeting actual customers. Branding requires huge budget but SEO is cost effective. Usually big giant companies have budgets to invest in branding and running marketing campaigns using all media means but for a medium and small sized company budget comes first as a major constraint and SEO helps to invest the capital in nurturing those efforts which can bring potential and targeted customers. Ultimately it increases sales and profit.

For an SEO expert there is always challenge what to promote a brand or the well optimized site. For the CEOs brand is more important because what actually they earned is the loyalty of customer and impact in his mind. Customer will refer the other for the same brand. As I told you earlier it is a traditional marketing strategy so owners have different focus and people are having different aspect for what they are looking for.

To Understand this scenario lets have an example: It starts from the keywords, in a company who was selling GRP Pipes (Glass Re-enforced Plastic). The debate was centered around what the manufacturers call it and what the customers call it. Manufacturers were more focused on their brand and its relevant keywords to be promoted and used in SEM campaign. But question was how people are searching for the grp pipe. Arab searchers may not use "grp pipe installers" keywords in their searches rather they would be using "grp pipe structured buildings" or somewhat like this. And may be another Asian is using "grp installation company"
Now whats the nightmare? People are looking for buildings with grp pipe installation won't be able to find the example over searches or the completed projects page of the same company who is providing service for grp pipe installation.

For a big company the branding keyword requirement wins because they have built the trust through their name. But for the smaller company where the customer relationship is building, the SEO organic strategy wins.

An SEO expert builds the strategies with improved web site structure, web site content and linking strategies to get your web site organically listed on the first page of major search engines.

SEO can also be used as a branding tool. If the SEO expert think wisely he can settle down the clash between SEO and branding. Because no doubt the brand is supreme important as well. It is earned in years by huge investments. The SEO must be included in the marketing strategy because it is cost effective way to bring targeted customer.

Brand may be well known in a particular region but SEO brings it to horizons. So either the product line is promoted or the brand, it converts in to profit. CEOs and other manufacturers should always consider an optimized SEO solution to promote their business over multi-billion rupees Internet.

Important point to be noted is bringing brand through SEO can be toughest marketing strategy but yet not to be ignored. So either facing a clash between SEO or organic searching and branding, one must build a unique strategy to blend the brand within SEO. Secondly if the product's target market is not associated with Internet, SEO can do nothing about it. Like a construction consultancy and management company wins the project through links or advertisements because they are already known in the industry and people looking for them do not use Internet as a tool to find best among them. But still people are considering SEO as a better marketing tool over Internet. This way or that way to make the brand drilled in customers mind or to bring targeted customer SEO is must effective and supportive.

Lets take an example of DELL. In Pakistan and rest of the world for laptop brand DELL is considered as most reliable. Why? They just show up in google's top ranking in the SERPs of organic searchers. When a person is looking for latest laptop and reliable laptop and he finds DELL at top. Instantly a concept is built that among all it is better because search engine is showing it on the top. Now brand is well known but SEO strategy helped the customer to decide. Search Engine is used to play the trick.

SEO is the cornerstone of Internet Marketing on the road of business prosperity.

SEO 3.0

SEO 3.0 in 2011 and on:

This is what we need to know in order to succeed both today AND tomorrow. These are the new rules we need to learn and apply if we want to succeed after all the major search engine algorithm changes that happened in late 2010 and so far in 2011.

So what were the major changes? It's more like what weren't the major changes. There were more game changing search engine events between October 2010 and March 2011 than there had been in the previous decade combined. Let's look at a few of the biggest:

Number One: Bing Joins Forces with Yahoo!

In late October 2010, Bing and Yahoo! made good on their long-standing threat (or promise) to unite - at least as far as rankings go. Now Yahoo!, which has about 22% of the search market volume, displays nearly identical listings to Bing. Because Bing already had about 11% of the search market's volume, Bing and Yahoo! combined now control a full third or more of the search market.

So how does this affect you? Well, in the past many people did not bother optimizing for Bing because it accounted for so little of the actual search space. For those people, the money they spent optimizing for Yahoo! is gone with no return on investment in sight, and they have to start fresh with Bing. That is a big deal.

Tip One: Start paying more attention to getting ranked on Bing. Some of the more important things on Bing are:

Good titles that include your three most important keywords and your company name (optional) separated by pipes (Keyword 1 | Keyword 2 | Keyword 3 | Company Name).

Descriptions that contains your three most important keywords.

Making sure each keyword appears on the written page about two to three times for every one hundred words, but no more than six times on a page.

Another big deal is SEO friendly URLs. So if your keyword was "search engine friendly" this would be a great URL : domain.com/search-engine-
friendly.html.

Number Two: Google Goes from Global to Local

For more than a decade Google has been proudly making the world seem smaller and smaller by being "the global search engine". Now, it wants to be the "local search engine". To accomplish this it has made all kinds of changes. One of the first, and biggest, was moving the Google Places '7-pack' listings from the upper right corner (where most people ignored them) to be integrated right into the main search results (where no one could miss them!) Welcome to Google's latest and greatest "Place Search".

What does this mean to you? It means that if you do not have a Google Places listing claimed, your nearest local competitors will be eating your lunch online when local customers find them instead of you at the top of page one search results within Google Place Search.

Tip Two: Visit "places.google.com/business" to claim your free Google Places listing. When you do, complete the listing as close to 100% as possible and then try to get some feedback posted. This will go a long way toward getting the best results from your local search engine optimization efforts.

Number Three: Google Eliminates the Need to Click

Google might have borrowed this idea from Bing (actually MSN a couple years back). It's called Instant Preview and it makes it so potential visitors no longer have to click on your search listing to decide if they like your site. This is thanks to a small magnifying glass icon on each search result that, when clicked, turns on a preview mode that shows a large thumbnail view of your web page. If the visitor does not like the looks of it, they simply move on with having to commit to the click.

This means anyone can now really "judge your book by its cover" and not ever even glance at what you have to say. A few months ago all you had to worry about was compelling copywriting. Now you need to worry about getting a person to invest one second in actually clicking the link. The fewer people who visit your site, the lower your rankings will go. Yes. Google does keep an eye on site popularity.

Tip Three: If you start seeing a decline in the number of visitors to your site, try this simple test. Print out a nice color copy of your web page (usually the home page) and the closely ranked pages of your competitors. Now mount all of them on a matte board and cover it with another matte board. Then have someone unfamiliar with your site quickly glance at the (now uncovered) board with the pages on it. Reveal the pages for just 2 to 3 seconds and ask them to indicate the one they like most. Repeat this process at least five times with other volunteers. If yours is not the page the majority selects, consider revising it until it is.

How to make Search Engine Friendly Site

Well it is never ending topic actually. Every search engine has its own strategy most of them are title and content based but consider all other aspects as well like meta and off page optimization.

Search Engine friendly websites are those websites which are developed by keeping in mind the standards of search engine tools and strategies. this will make easier for you to achieve early better ranking in SERPs. Search engine sends crawler to visit the pages and index them within database. Crawler is a tool developed by search engines to provide updated information from websites.

We can communicate with crawler to get better ranking in search engine result pages.

Here are few important practices one should never ignore:

HTML Suggestions:

HEAD
In head area the title tag should be placed at first before all other tags, otherwise the crawler may overlook it and this will damage your ranking in SERP.

Title must not longer than 7 to 9 words. It should be relevant with the content and must contain keyword in it.

Meta section within head of page should be well defined. Meta keywords and Meta descriptions are most important factors for crawlers.

Use H1 heading and keyword should appear in this heading. Use H1 in the beginning of page.

ALT image attributes are most important. In first three images of your page at least they must have ALT tag with them.

Keyword
Keywords should be bold. This tells your emphasis to crawler. It is suggested that please put your keyword bold one or more times to show the importance.

Keep in mind the keyword density which is 5~7%.

Avoid Keyword Cannibalization and follow a proper rule to achieve required popularity of targeted page.

Your keyword should appear at least once in text links. It is recommend to use it in such links up to 6 times.

The keyword should be present in the last of your page too. Your page will be more relevant if your keyword appears at the end of the page. Put your keyword in the last 50 words of the web page.

The page should contain the keyword in heading of your page. Use H1 heading and keyword should appear in this heading. Use H1 in the beginning of page.

Write Content of every page in search engine friendly manner.

Sitemap should be self descriptive and informing the crawler about change frequency of web page so that crawler should visit as per your requirement otherwise crawler will set its own visit frequency which may or may not suite your requirement.

No link should be broken or ambiguous.

Search Engine will always display the most relevant content containing websites on top of its SERPs. It will redirect the visitor and customer to highly relevant website.

Importance of Content in SEO

Content is all text, images, sounds everything on the page. It is called king for the visitor. Content provides the information about web page.

During writing the content, the given information should be accurate, to the point and in proper ethics of linguistics.

Content is very important for the search engine. Majorly most of the search engines give importance to the content. Crawler of search engine checks the pages frequently to find any updates in content. In sitemap we can tell search engine to send crawler or depute spider.

While writing content for the web page identify the descriptive title, plot the purpose of the page and the targeted visitor in mind. Always keep audience in your mind while writing content in web page. Because search engine strategies are directly dependent on the interest of searcher. If content is good in description and attractive for visitor to open the link to find details. Bingo! You are a good content writer.

In search results you might have noticed that the keyword is highlighted in SERP.

Here in the image you can see the keywords are also shown in description of the link. This description is usually acquired from meta of the page but sometimes content is also used to get such information. Some SEO experts claim that Google considers content not meta.

Thus content should be written in an informative way because it challenges the ranking of search engine given to a page. Content must be relevant with the links, title and targeted visitor for every web page. Relevancy in your description about the website attract the targeted customers.

Always write quality content. Quantity content may lose a visitor. Use info graphics to let the user experience the information rather interpretation.

Content updating in SEO is the process of editing a web site's content and code in order to improve visibility within one or more search engines. Frequent updates in content engage the crawler of search engine on the website. This improves the quick visibility of your website in SERPs.

Content comes under On Page Optimization.
The keyword must be used in good proportion and density should not be greater than 7%.
Title should not be longer than 7 to 9 words.

Keyword Cannibalization

Keyword Cannibalization means internal competition within Website among its pages to appear in SERPs of search engines. In more simpler words, it starts when certain keyword is used in many pages of website and all pages start competing with each other thus search engine gets confused to rank which page better.

Most of the SEO professionals and experts ignore or do not understand this phenomenon in depth. This results in to poor SEO for a website. One page starts eating the popularity of other page and may be you forgot to focus on your targeted page in actual.

This is website's internal structure problem which is directly related with information. Sub-pages start targeting same or similar keyword used in content or title.

Lets understand this problem by an example: If a person is selling bicycles, probably he will name it alongwith its model. For example Sohrab 101, Sohrab Junior, Sohrab Race, Sohrab Scooty etc. Now the keyword sohrab is being repeated in all of its products. It is also his brand name thus making it unavoidable too. Now 4 or 5 of its web pages are showing different models of its bicycle brand. Now which page is important? Which page you want to be displayed in search result? Thus an internal competition within webpages have been developed. Search Engine crawler or spider will be confused among the pages targeting similar keyword. This will show that website is quite unfriendly with search engine. If being SEO professional you forget about this internal competition all your SEO hard work may get you unsatisfactory results.

This issue should not be taken lightly because

It makes the website unfriendly for search engines.
It confuses the crawler to rank pages.
May be the important or targeted page do not reflect in search result.
Crawler may not go in depth among your pages.

Here is the solution of keyword cannibalization. Make separate pages having title of Kids Bicycles, Racing Bicycles, Scooty and Bicycles. Link every page to one main page named Bicycle. This will actually work for search engine to rank better and get target customer on specific page. If customer is interested in buying a sports bicycle, the SERP will directly take him to the targeted page. This will result in to quality traffic on targeted pages.

It is bad to place important keywords to all pages. It is false thinking that more usage of keyword will force the search engine to rank the page better.

Sometimes we place all of the important content on one page. Remember not everything is equally important for everyone. So identify similar products and classify them in to pages. Make separate pages for similar content. This will help you in getting rid of content duplication. Keyword density will also be under control.

In doing SEO do not follow or focus on getting number 1 in ranking only. This will make you following red light of truck always. Go through other long trail processes as well. If search engine changes its strategy you would be completely out! So focus on all other tips and techniques as well. Set priorities to your own skill set and include whatever comes to you. This will help your work to stay longer.

Link Building in Off Page Optimization

Link building means creating links of your website on other websites by placing Anchor links, ads, link exchange, link farming, one way linking, two way linking, reciprocal linking and three way linking.

You can place your links on social networking sites, search engine listing sites, search engine submission, relevant sites, promotional websites and blogs.

Link building is done to achieve maximum traffic towards your site. Now the question comes which traffic? The answer lies in the concept and motive behind the link building. If the purpose of link building is to generate high traffic volume by any means it comes under Black Hat SEO.

One Way:       Site A link is on site B.
Two Way:       Site A link on site B and site B link on site A. It is called reciprocal as well.
Three Way:     Site A link on site B. Site B link on site C. Site C link on Site A.
Link Farming:    Site A link on multiple relevant or irrelevant sites to divert traffic towards site A.

Link Juice: If your link is placed on sites the juice transfers to your site. It means high PR and higher chances of visibility in SERPs of search engines.

Some high PR social websites allows anchor links on their websites. Link exchange is done by web masters to promote their websites on a deal of give and take. It may come under black hat seo.

Link building comes under off page optimization. Back links are created on other websites to bring more traffic towards your site. Link building should be done on relevant, authentic and authoritative sites. Avoid spamming it is Black Hat SEO.

Search engines ban the website in SERPs and stop the crawler to visit banned website. Always be careful while doing backlinks or link building. Try not to fool the crawler or the search engine by showing the fake popularity of your website. This will result in to disappearance of your website.

Backlinking in Off page Optimization

Backlink is basically a hyperlink of your website on some other website. It means that website sends the visitor to your website. Backlinks are incoming links. More number of backlinks on different sites mean more popularity or the importance over the Web.

"If content is the king then backlink is the queen" -(Abdul Wahab)

Placing backlinks on high PR (Page Rank) sites means instant ranking in search engines.If your website's link is placed on a social networking site whose PR is high or on some relevant site that has similar content as of yours it will stimulate the process of high ranking in SERPs. Search engines assume some specific sites as authentic sites like .gov, .edu, .tv etc.

Having your backlink on some sites improves your own page ranking as well. To check the ranking of your page you can install google toolbar. This tool bar can tell you the ranking of any website or its page. Similarly placing others links on your website will lower down your PR.

In toolbar you can see the page rank

You can search high PR sites over Internet further you can verify it by using google toolbar for the current status of PR. To get information about high PR sites please drop your queries in comments.

Selling or purchasing backlinks is Black Hat SEO. Link exchange among webmasters is called two way exchange or reciprocal and is also Black Hat SEO. Placing links everywhere with improper keyword density, irrelevant content containing websites and spam sites is also Black Hat SEO. This is called Link Farming again a Black Hat SEO technique.

Backlink should always be placed on relevant website. This comes under White Hat SEO.

Backlinking is done on other websites that is why it comes under off-page optimization in SEO. Keeping in mind while placing your link on other website that the content of that website should be quality content and that website if authentic is a plus point. To sum up the concept we should discuss the outcome of backlink. More backlinks mean more crawler visit on your website. Thus this will result in to higher ranking in searches.

Backlinks are also known as incoming links, inbound links, link building, inlinks, and inward links.

Important to note that pagerank and search engine result page SERP ranking has no relationship neither similar in phenomenon.

Web 2.0 in SEO training

Web 2.0 has changed the face of business. It  has brought revolution in WWW. Web 2.0 is the newer version of Web 1.0. The phenomenon behind the concept of Web 2.0 is participation of user in the website by posting and interacting with other users. Traditional concept in web was a user opens a website and remained a passive user. He may get the option to leave comments in Guest Book of website if available and usually the content kept private from other users. But  now minds are broaden and people do not mind if others read what the wrote.

The output of Web 2.0 is social media networking sites. Where users come and spend time in fact it would be more appropriate to say they spend lives. They talk with the wall. They get to know what others and their connections and their connections are sharing. Thus resulting in to more people around and sharing information. Lets cash this concept in terms of Web Marketing or Search Engine Marketing.

Examples of Web 2.0 include social networking sites, blogs, wikis, video sharing sites. Place your flag on each of these sites. You will be absolutely visible in search results.

Web 2.0 is "read-write-web". It is developed for the user. There is no change in technical specification but just accumulating the links together and bringing them to a platform where everyone can speak with or without permission. This concept gives more than the retrieval of information. User browse and can ask a question. The interactive feature enables other to participate. Thus users are syndicated.

Podcasting
Blogging
Tagging
Contributing to RSS
Social bookmarking
Social networking

This is all about Web 2.0. Nothing technical just placing your footprints of existence over Internet.

Lets have an example: a person is selling a hydraulic jack for cars. He needs to improve his sales. Of course he needs to. He should start a blog about it, a website, should create account on every popular social media networking website, give comments, providing support to users, upload a video about how it works and link all of them together. That is it. His existence is proven. Sooner not only his geographical location but he can be seen all over the world. Don't forget to use SEO techniques in your website and other web based applications like blogs. He can target his own area of sales or services by customizing his product in search result. This concept comes under being search engine friendly. Tell your search engine that you focus on some particular geographic location so the true searchers could reach you and you get better sales in contrast with traffic hitting on your site. How to tell a search engine that I am search engine friendly?

Web 1.0 Web 2.0
DoubleClick --> Google AdSense
Ofoto --> Flickr
Akamai --> BitTorrent
mp3.com --> Napster
Britannica Online --> Wikipedia
personal websites --> blogging
evite --> upcoming.org and EVDB
domain name speculation --> search engine optimization
page views --> cost per click
screen scraping --> web services
publishing --> participation
content management systems --> wikis
directories (taxonomy) --> tagging ("folksonomy")
stickiness --> syndication

Google is promoting the Web2.0 by implementing concept in its strategies and applications

Social Search in Google

The Search Engine giant Google has turned organic search into social search by weaving the linked information through social networking sites in SERPs. This trend shows the tendency towards its strategic move towards most influenced culture of social networking or e-communities.

Google is converting the web search into social search by displaying the posts from Twitter, Flickr, blogger and other social networks. It was initially introduced by Google in 2009 later its expansion is called Google Social Search

The concept is to bring relevant posts of user's friends in to search results, this will enhance the importance of social networking as well. The world is getting more electronic and virtual. The concept of global village and virtualization is getting mature.

But this feature will only be available to those who are having Google account. Google profile can accomodate the other social media accounts by linking them together. Here you can show your rigid and flexible existence over the Internet. Now you just need to bring a product over Internet place it on every social media networking site and then link all sites to each other. Use appropriate keywords and invite others to comment or retweet. Here you go!

Linking social searching will actually bring you more closer to your network instead of wandering among strangers. On other hand the authenticity will be a question mark. A user uses the search engine to reach its destination. But this feature may bring him to some useless or ambiguous information. Google need to sort out the spam and authentic content among these social networking sites. Or this could result in to a big failure as the SERP will display junk and useless comments or posts rather taking the searcher to its desired websites.

As the search engine requires the websites to be more search engine friendly then same applies to the search engines as well. Google should ask whether to link posts from friends social networking accounts before displaying results. If the user is loggin in the Google account then his choice can also be accommodated on nature of his interest.

Google will not display the input from Facebook. Shocking! Yes. As once Facebook declined to share data with Google. But Google displays the profile information of facebook in search results.

Search Engine Strategies in SERP 2011

Does all search engines provide the same results? Absolutely NOT. It shows the difference in tendencies of search engines while ranking them in SERP. If a person is optimizing website for Google he is lacking the support of Yahoo.

Different search engines present different results against same keyword. The results of most queries confirm this difference of strategies among search engines.There is a minor overlap in search engines while displaying results on SERPs. Even keeping in mind the same required keyword provide identical variant of the keyword to same search engine and compare the results. You will again amazed to see the results shown. Search Engine guru says it depends on your geographical location and trend of keyword.

Search Engine optimization is an on-going long process. Every search engine has its own strategy. Some search engines consider the linking, some consider the meta and some consider the popularity among other social networking websites. Here I am discussing about the ranking of SERP for same keyword in different search engines. It shows the strategies vary and thus the result. To see the trend of page rank in 2011 please click here

One must follow primarily the standards and recommended measures while optimizing the website and then further he should tune it to some possible extent as per every search engine's strategy. Everyone is not using Google or Yahoo for searches. There are many other users who use other famous search engines like MSN, Bing etc. No doubt one must focus on favorite search engines to optimize the website.

Pagerank in 2011

 The Next Generation of Ranking Signals
Every 3-4 years, there’s a big shift or addition to the key metrics Google (and, to a lesser extent MSN/Bing and Yahoo!) uses to order competitive search results.

1996-1999: On-page keyword usage + meta data

1999 – 2002: PageRank + On-page

2002 – 2005: Anchor text + Domain name + PageRank + On-Page

2005 – 2009: Domain authority + Diversity of linking domains + Topic modeling + Anchor text + Domain name + PageRank + On-Page

In 2010 and 2011, we’ve already seen the entry of social signals from Facebook and Twitter. The recent clickstream stories revealed that both Google and Bing employ clickstream data (Bing has done so publicly for the last 3 years, Google more quietly and probably longer), though this likely is a relatively small data point for both.

It’s my belief that the next generation of ranking signals will rely on social networking sites.

Important to note that pagerank and search engine result page SERP ranking has no relationship neither similar in phenomenon.

Pagerank by search engines

PageRank is the measure of the importance of a page based on the incoming links from other pages.  Every page has its own page rank. Most important page rank should be the home page or the product page. Any page can be optimized to get better ranking in search engine.

Pagerank value starts from 0 up to 10. Google tool bar is available to view the page rank value and is free to download.

In simple terms, each link to a page on your site from another site adds to your site's PageRank. Not all links are equal: Search Engine works hard to improve the user experience by identifying spam links and other practices that negatively impact search results. If your site link is placed on some important site this will add rank to your website. Important sites are measured usually on basis of .gov, .edu, .pk, .cn or .uk. These URLs are authentic and search engine always consider such sites as important sites. Placing your link on such website will boost the ranking of your page instantly. Moreover such sites which capture huge number of hits are also referred as important sites.

The best types of links are those that are given based on the quality of your content. In order for your site to rank well in search results pages, it's important to make sure that search engine can crawl and index your site correctly.Your site should be search engine friendly.

Important to note that pagerank and search engine result page SERP ranking has no relationship neither similar in phenomenon.

Indexing in SEO training

Indexing is a process of compiling the fetched information from internet. It is just like the index of the book.

Crawler processes each of the pages it crawls in order to compile a massive index of all the words it sees and their location on each page. Crawler can process many, but not all, content types.

The processing of crawling means how often the page should be crawled, nature of page, relevant or irrelevant links, meta descriptions, content, geographical location and of course ALT tags, titles, headings etc. Such information is used to display results. The results are determined on the basis of fetched data or indexed data within search engine. Search engine uses crawler to do the job.

Crawler is an algorithmic based software designed to fetch information about pages over internet to produce most efficient search results.

Crawler of search engine in SEO

Crawling is the process by which Googlebot (Software by Google) discovers new and updated pages to be added to the Google index.

Cralwer comes to the website and reads all pages linked within website, it also goes to all other links diverting towards other websites. Crawler has a scheduled visit plan and it is set by Google. However you can specify the significant of web page by telling it to crawler. You can do it by specifying the significance in sitemap.

Google uses a huge set of computers to fetch (or "crawl") billions of pages on the web. The program that does the fetching is called Googlebot (also known as a robot, bot, or spider).

Googlebot or crawler uses an algorithmic process: computer programs determine which sites to crawl, how often, and how many pages to fetch from each site.

Google's crawl process begins with a list of web page URLs, generated from previous crawl processes, and augmented with Sitemap data provided by webmasters. As Googlebot visits each of these websites it detects links on each page and adds them to its list of pages to crawl. New sites, changes to existing sites, and dead links are noted and used to update the Google index.

Google doesn't accept payment to crawl a site more frequently, and we keep the search side of our business separate from our revenue-generating AdWords service.

SEM Search Engine Marketing

SEM or Search Engine Marketing is a process to promote website on search engine rankings in search engine result pages. The phenomenon solely derived to target potential users to gain maximum ROI (Return Over Investment). This is done by increasing hits of visitors on website through the use of Search Engine Optimization SEO and other related tools including paid placement, contextual advertisements and paid inclusion.

As the number of sites is increasing rapidly since mid-late nineties some tools appeared as search engines to provide required information and link to the user. Suddenly it brought an idea of promoting website over the search engine ranking. The better is ranking, more hits you get. This resulted into building strategies to show up on the first page of SERP of search engines. Search engines started building their business models to cash this race. The first program was presented as pay per click in 1996 by Open Text and then Goto.com. Later it was adopted by Microsoft, Yahoo, Bing and obviously Google. Google's adwords program promoted this type of marketing globally. Its business model received overwhelming response and attained world wide success.

Internet Marketers or Search Engine Optimizers expanded the vision of customer by promoting the idea of Search Engine Marketing to attain maximum ROI by getting more traffic through advertisements. New SEO consultants emerged focusing upon marketing and advertising through search engines.

In 2001 SEM model was presented to cover the spectrum of activities involved in performing SEO, Search Engine paid listing management, submitting sites to directories and developing online marketing strategies to promote businesses. As the idea grew bigger it also showed an offspring as SEMM Search Engine Marketing Management. SEMM is purely related with interest of ROI over the business through web promotions. SEMM also integrates organic SEO, trying to achieve top ranking without using paid means of achieving top in search engines, and PayPerClick SEO. some of the attention is placed on the web page layout design and how content and information is displayed to the website visitor. It does not focus on relevant traffic building only.

4 Tips to improve SEO

SEO or search engine optimization will increase your website’s exposure on the internet.  There are a variety of methods both basic and complex within SEO.  You may already know a few of the more basic methods, so here we will supply SEO tips that will help you improve your search engine optimization that is already in place.

  1. To begin you may need to work on your inbound links and outbound links.  Google will rank your search engine based on the links you have, as well as keywords, new content, etc.  It can be fairly easy to create external links. You find sites that have resource information regarding your website topic.  Sites like .gov, .org, and even Wikipedia will not mind if you have an external link to their site.  In fact most websites do not mind.  What can be harder is getting the inbound links.  This is where many website designers can truly improve their SEO.  To get inbound links you have to show other websites why they want to link to you.  More specifically you need to have content, keywords, and products or information other web designers will find useful.  To get the links use social media sites, YouTube, and blogs.  You can create your own inbound links from external blogging sites.  You can use internal links as one way to increase your page rank.  Google and other search engines will raise your values accordingly, especially if you have the relevant keywords in those links.
  2. Headlines and title tags are often an area that needs improving on a website.  A good writer knows that the topic you discuss must be shown, and therefore the topic has to be discussed in headlines and titles.  So your headlines and title tags must be keyword rich, but more than that you have to have the right placement.  If your keyword is Malpractice Lawyer, then this keyword should appear in the first few words of your headline.  You do not want to leave the keyword till the last word of the headline or even in the middle.  It gets lost.  Your rankings will be higher if the keyword is first.
  3. Anytime you add new content such as blog posts or articles to provide new content on your website you need to make sure the website addresses include keywords.  It is not enough to have new content. You also have to make sure the URL is relevant.
  4. Our last tip for you on improving SEO is about highlighting your best content on each page.  Every time you have a point to make you need to use bullets, numbers, bold, italics, or another form of highlighting the best content.  Consumers’ eyes will track this content and learn that your site is the best.  It also helps gain the attention of the search engines for ranking.

Title of Page in SEO Training

Title is the name/short description of the page shown in title bar of browser. Title of the page should be defined for every page and it must contain the core idea of the page. Title is most important in Search Engine Optimization.

Title is shown to the visitor and it is also noted by the crawler of search engine. In SERP the title of that particular page is shown as link. Thus in title use the phrase or keyword that best describe your page and commonly searched by the searchers.

The length for title should be up to 90 characters, it varies from search engine to search engine. But ideally it should be short and well describing the page. Google shows 69 Characters (Including Spaces) for Page Title. Yahoo shows up to 72 Characters (Including Spaces) for a Page Title. (PDF’s up to 75 characters).
Bing shows 65 Characters (Including Spaces) for a Page Title Tag. And we can quote so many examples here.

Title must contain the keyword as well. Title should be relevant with the content of the page. These important points make the website search engine friendly.

Search Engine Result Page (SERP) in SEO

Search Engine Result Page (SERP) is a page shown to visitor after search button is pressed on any search engine. This page displays the link to the website and short description against the keywords or phrase entered by the visitor in bold letters. I will talk about the organic or pure search or organic search only.

When a user searches a keyword or phrase the result is displayed on the SERP. The title of the search result is shown as link. You can click to visit the page. The description below the link of website shows the content within the page and some bold words can be seen matching your entered keywords or phrase.

Please look below to have an example

Here in the first result in SERP by google we find first line as a link to the page. It shows the title of that page. Below the link some description is shown with the bold words. These bold words are same as entered in search bot. Below the description the full URL is written as well. You can copy and paste the URL to other browser.

Most important point to note is search result page shows the meta content of that page. So in Search Engine Optimization meta content is much important. If one do not define meta tag, search engine assumes the site it not search engine friendly and it captures content to understand the nature of web page. To get better ranking in search result page meta content is used and it makes the page search engine friendly. Every page should have its own meta described.

Meta in SEO training

Meta is the section in programming/coding of website which is written for search engines. The content present in it describes the nature of website. Search Engine checks the content in meta and understand the type and further content relevancy of site.

Meta is not visible to the visitor of website. It is written in a standard format of programming language like HTML,

Meta is defined under the head section after the title of the site. To see the example please click here
Meta is composed of two mandatory elements one is keywords and the other is description.

In keywords section of meta one can write the number of keywords as per analysis to describe best about its web page. Search engine pick the keywords from this section. The maximum length for keywords in meta is up to 250 characters.

The other section is description where the short description of web page or introduction of web page is written. The limit for characters is 170. It varies depending on search engine strategies. Google shows 156 Characters (Including Spaces) for Meta Description. Yahoo shows up to 161 Characters (Including Spaces) for Meta Description.

 In SERP (Search Engine Result Page) the search engine shows the description if you defined or it picks from the content of the web page. Meta is quite important in Search Engine Optimization.

Each page should have its own meta tags with keywords and description, because search engines do not only emphasize on home page or main page. If you want to bring some specific content of your web page in SERP you need to define individual meta for every page. The selection of keywords should be based on analysis. There are many tools available on www to get best keywords for your web page. For details click here

atom.xml vs RSS

Atom is an xml format file (atom.xml). It is used to publish syndicated content of blogs and websites in a standard.
User can can discover a file described as "atom.xml" in the URL that can be copied and pasted into an aggregator to subscribe to the feed. It is much similar with RSS.

It has few differences with RSS or we can say the shortcomings of RSS are overcome in atom.xml.

  • Atom was developed to be vendor neutral and freely extensible by any user; it is an "open standard."
  • Atom lies within an XML-namespace.
  • Atom includes "autodiscovery," allowing feed aggregators to automatically detect the presence of a feed.
  • Atom differentiates between relative and non-relative URIs.
  • Atom has separate "summary" and "content" elements.
  • Atom explicitly labels a payload as plaintext or HTML .
  • Each entry has a globally unique ID.
Atom has been adopted by many syndication tools, including Google's Blogger, Gmail and Google News. Microsoft has added Atom support to the feed browser integrated into Internet Explorer 7.

Sitemap in SEO Training

Sitemap is a file which provides links information embedded in the website. It contains links of all pages. Search Engine crawler look in to this file to scroll all pages inside your website.

The sitemap file is of two types.
  1. .txt file
  2. .xml file
.txt file is a simple notepad file. Webmaster paste all links of the site in this file one in each line and save this file as text file.

.xml file is a file with all links of the website along with different parameters to set priority of a specific page and change frequency of the page. Change frequency means how often the page will be updated.
This helps the crawler to understand the attributes of page and its a search engine friendly activity to save time of crawler.

A simple example is shown below:

<url>
  <loc>http://iqaisarseo.blogspot.com/</loc>
  <lastmod>2011-01-25T10:53:00+00:00</lastmod>
  <changefreq>daily</changefreq>
</url>

The change frequency can be set as once, daily, weekly, monthly etc. "lastmod" means last modification date and time. Add this information with every link of your website in sitemap.xml file.

Webmaster make the sitemap file with either .txt or .xml extension and upload it through his ftp account in his website. This page is not displayed for visitors. (example: sitemap.txt or sitemap.xml

Sitemap file is done during on page optimization.

For blogspot website sitemap submission is a bit complicated process in google webmaster tool which is made easy here

One can generate his sitemap.xml file through internet by hundreds of free sitemap.xml generating websites. Its easy to use !!!

Understanding HTML in SEO training

HTML is hypertext markup language. It is commonly used in web page development. HTML code is written in a text file (.txt) extension and saved as "name.htm" (don't forget to add double cots and "select all" option while saving document.

Understanding HTML coding in SEO in important as the SEO expert should know the basics to define title, keywords, description and headings properly. If the coding is wrong he could be able to identify the errors on page. It comes under On page optimization.

Here is an example of simple html coding.

<html>
    <head>
    <title>my first HTML</title>
(what is meta)
    <meta name="keywords" content="introduction, my site, personal site, my own site />

    <meta name="description" content="Learn HTML explains the basics to advance level of learning free by using templates, source codes and tons of scripts />
 </head>
<body>

A <strong>free HTML Learning</strong> website. <br>

Heading Tags
<H1> This is H1 heading </h1>
<H2>This is H2 heading </h2>
<H3> This is H3 heading </h3>
<H4> This is H4 heading </h4>
<H5> This is H5 heading </h5>
<H6> This is H6 heading </h6>

<p>   (Paragraph tag)

Paragraph about content of my site
</p>
You can insert a hyperlink in your website by simply putting one line code.
<a href>"www.mysite.com.pk">My Site</a>
You can insert image and put description for mouse over display by following these commands
<img src="www.abc.com" alt="sample picture"/>
<img src="sky.gif" alt="blue sky" />

</body>
</html>

Follow the tags and closings carefully while writing code in HTML.

SEO experts much consider the head section of coding where title, keywords and description is defined for
search engines. Most of the SEO tuning scripts are included in head section of web page coding.

Link Building in On Page Optimization

Link Building term is used to place links on your page. These links can be of within website or can take the visitor to other sites. We will discuss about the inbound links or within site links. This is called On Page Optimization.

Internal link building helps search engines to classify your web pages.
If you want to bring attention of crawler towards the main page or any specific page of your website you can use that page's keyword in other pages and mark that keyword as a link towards your desired page. This way crawler will get impact of importance of that specific page. Or in other way of understanding you chose a keyword relevant to your page that searchers use on search engines, make sure that most of the pages in your site must contain that specific keyword.

Furthermore your site should be linked with other similar websites to draw attention and better ranking in search engines through crawler. This is called inbound link building. For example if site X is similar to site Y and site X link is placed on site Y, crawler will give importance to site X due to its popularity. But keep in mind that Not all Links are equal because if a health assistance site is getting links from a machinery products site, search engine will possible not count it but if that site is getting links from medical, hospital or doctors sites this will put it in better ranking. To understand importance or weightage of URL click here

Putting link on your site is as simple as
<a href="www.google.com">Popular Search Engine</a>
The URL is link address and text is anchor text

Also make note that targeted keyword in anchor text should not be included in all your page, please vary a little.

Now how to get inbound links. Inbound links are essential to search engine optimization. Without inbound links you have no chances on Google, which dominates search engine world with ~65% market share.
Ways to get inbound links:
  • Submit your website to online directories.
  • Submit to paid directories like Yahoo Directory and Business.com
  • Join local business chamber and get a link from it. Google trusts .gov links
  • If you know professors, try to get a link from university domains. Google trusts .edu links
  • Get in touch with your business partners and request a link from their website
  • Buy links from other websites. Google considers this "black hat" and may ban your website. Careful link buying still works.
  • Create quality content and email it to websites in your industry. If they like it, they will link to you voluntarily.
  • Exchange links with webmasters. Not as useful as it used to be.
  • Rent links from links brokers. Do a search if you're interested.
Links should never be broken or should not be ambigous like
www.mysubdomainpakistan.com/contact/feedback?en.l/

Avoid using such links. The link must be relevant to the content, title and direction of your page.
